Don't Quit

1/30/2013 (Resilience)

Never will I forget being asked to recite the poem "Don’t Quit" at my eighth grade graduation! In fact, many decades later, I can still recite that poem, and I often do repeat the words aloud just before bed and as soon as I awaken in the morning.

This poem has such special meaning to me because the message rings true for all of us. Sometimes we simply grow tired and weary and quit right before we reach our goal. We can feel it. We can smell it. We know we’re almost there, and then something happens. Mental and physical exhaustion coupled with some discouragement take over and we sit down and say, "That’s it. I’m done. I quit!"

Think what would have happened if people like Henry Ford, Einstein, Isaac Newton, Martin Luther King, and others like them had quit a moment too soon. Our lives would be so totally different, and their lives would have been so different, too!

Back in 1995 I had a dream of writing a book and getting it published. At the time, I had my eleven kids living at home. Needless to say, it was a nut house! There were kids of all ages and stages who needed my time and attention. Yet, deep within my heart I had such a burning desire to write a book and get it published that I stayed up into the wee hours of the night and envisioned what it would feel like to be a published author. Every time I walked into a book store I walked over to a shelf of books and would pick up a book and hold it close. Oh, how much I wanted this dream to come true!

It seemed the more I tried to write, the more obstacles came into my path to prevent me from writing. Discouragement visited often. BUT, my desire far outweighed the pain of holding close to my dream. I wanted to see my writing in print! And, nothing was going to stop me. Nothing!

Some people even snickered at the thought of me completing a manuscript and then going through the process of attempting to get it published. But, four years later, and thousands of tears and hundreds of sleepless nights later, the goal was reached! I lived to see the day my book, Silent Grief, was sitting on the shelves in many, many bookstores across this nation!

My message to you is this: Don’t give up! I don’t care how impossible your dream may seem to others, hold fast to it and never, ever quit! You’ll do it! Yes, you will do it!

"Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man……..So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit. It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit!" -- This quote is from the poem "Don’t Quit" – Author Unknown. Repeat it every day and reach your dream!
