Stillbirth: Take the Pledge to See this Movie!

7/1/2013 (Grief Relief)

It is with great excitement that I share this article on stillbirth and the upcoming "first feature film ever created with stillbirth as the central theme." Please read the following words from Sheila Garey and then follow through by taking the pledge to see the movie!  It's time for the world to recognize that stillbirth occurs and to validate what a loss a stillbirth is to every family who has experienced this type of child loss!  Thank you, Sheila, for the amazing work you are doing!

Stillbirth. Most people run for the door when they hear that word.

But, did you know that close to 1 in 160 births in the United States end in stillbirth? That’s about 26,000 deaths a year. And according to the World Health Organization, in 2009 there was over 2.6 million stillbirths globally, with more than 8 200 deaths a day.

I was blissfully unaware, until it happened to me.

My son, Sebastian, was stillborn on April 6th, 2013. After realizing that I hadn’t felt him move for a long time, we went to the hospital for an ultrasound. After the longest drive and longest wait of my entire life, the doctor delivered the news. "I'm sorry, but there is no heartbeat!" Devastation struck and in a moment, our lives were turned upside-down forever. My husband and I felt so alone.

But since Sebastian’s death, we have been astonished at the number of people who have reached out to us to say “Yes, this happened to us. We lost our baby too.” Why haven’t we heard about this? Why is it such a taboo subject in our culture? Why is there so much silence?

More importantly, how can we change this? We must break the silence by raising awareness. And there’s a new movie that does just that.

Return to Zero is a film inspired by the experience of the movie's writer/director Sean Hanish, whose son was stillborn when his wife was 37 weeks pregnant. In his own words:

Two years ago I quit my commercial life and dedicated myself to building a different kind of memorial—this one with images, shots and scenes—one which I’m (hopefully) better at building. It’s a miracle that this film was made—a testament to leading with your heart. We built it and they came, the actors, the crew, and the parents of lost children like wind at our back when we needed it the most.”

This is the first feature film ever created with stillbirth as its central theme. The amazing cast includes Minnie Driver, Alfred Molina and Paul Adelstein. It's a beautiful and touching film that will change how people view stillbirth and the effect it has on parents, relationships, families, and communities. You can catch a glimpse of it here: You can also visit the movie's website at or their Facebook page at

Right now, though, Return to Zero needs your help. The plan is for it to be shown at several film festivals. But the ultimate goal is for it to be picked up by Hollywood and shown in theaters across the country (and around the world). But there's a problem. Hollywood doesn’t think there’s an
audience for it.

We NEED to prove Hollywood wrong!

Since we lost our son, we have found an incredible community of other loss parents. We’ve been continually amazed at how well we band together to help and support each other. We are so proud to be a part of this amazing community. A community of caring, compassionate and committed families.

And as one voice we can prove Hollywood wrong!

Pledge to see this movie!!

By taking the pledge, you’re helping to show Hollywood that we're committed to BREAK THE SILENCE surrounding stillbirth. And that we won’t be silent any longer. We're already proving that there is an audience for this movie. As of this writing, there are almost 90,000 pledges to see Return to Zero. But we still have a lot of work to do. Will you make the time right now to take the pledge? It's quick and easy. You can go here to make your voice by heard. It literally only takes a few seconds. I would also appreciate it if you’d list me, Sheila Garey, as your Local Leader on the pledge form.

On behalf of Sebastian and every precious baby lost to stillbirth - Thank you!
